A visit to Winfield’s Cafe
August 6, 2009 Posted by Chris Tingom Filed under Coffee
Where do I begin? Winfield’s Cafe is a coffee shop in Old Town Scottsdale that opened in early 2009. The coffee shop is operated by First Baptist Church of Scottsdale (located inside a free-standing building next to the church) which operates the coffee shop as a community effort.

My cappuccino was bubbly. This isn’t how I like my cappuccino’s (again, I prefer frothy milk texture as opposed to foam that is mostly air). I’ve taken to ordering cappuccino’s after concluding it is the perfect test drink at shops I visit for the first time.

My double espresso. I just don’t know what to say about it. It wasn’t the right color. It should look like this. The coffee is roasted by Matador Coffee.

The inside of Winfield’s is quite large, and is available for events (just ask). They also have free wireless internet so if you’re a laptop surfer stop in.

Another view of the inside of the building.

Some sort of Snickers drink (not mine).

Another sugar drink (I think it was banana flavored, not mine).

Winfield’s exterior view.
The shop has limited signage which makes it hard to spot from the road. I was told that the signage is limited due to zoning restrictions. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d probably miss it just driving past. The shop operates as a non-profit and is apparently in the black, so that’s promising.
I think Winfield’s is more about the community than the coffee. Actually, I’m sure of it. I didn’t sense any passion for great coffee, just a passion for the “third place,” or the neighborhood coffee shop. The shop uses a fully automatic espresso machine (I don’t remember the type, but I was told this). Something else that is concerning is that most of the staff volunteer their time, and this includes the baristas. It’s unlikely that all of the volunteer staff are fully versed in espresso drink creation.
As someone who will drive across town to experience great coffee, Winfield’s is not a place I would visit for traditional espresso drinks. But if you typically just order a sugary frapp you’ll probably love Winfield’s.
