I have so many coffee shops I need to visit and not enough time.
One of them on my list is the new Solo Cafe. I actually received an email recently from the owners.
My name is Andrew-Liam Kelsey. My business partner Chad Bare and I recently opened a coffee shop in Tempe called Solo Cafe, and we wanted to extend an invitation to you to visit our place, sample our product and experience our atmosphere. We are located in the Mill Towne Center on the southeast corner of Mill and Baseline in between Curves and Altered Ego Salon.
We offer free wi-fi and an assortment of books to read and movies to watch in a cozy, comfortable environment. Chris Lee emailed me this morning to let me know of an interesting development for CupZ Coffee:
We headed out to CupZ at 136th & Via Linda (Scottsdale) this morning but the name had changed. It is called Gourmet Caffe. They were also closed. I didn’t see the specifics but thought the sign said they were open 7 am to 2 pm. Maybe closed Mondays?? Or closed indefinitely?
I phoned the Tempe location and asked about this and they told me that they sold the Scottsdale location last October. Tempe and Chandler/Gilbert are still going strong though.
I was at Olive & Ivy recently and discovered that while they offer free wireless internet, they also block popular social networking web sites like LinkedIn and YouTube. What’s up with that? Why provide internet at all if you’re going to block it?

One of our concessionaire customers has some stuff going on at the FBR Open. At the last moment, they are in need of skilled baristi to work at the FBR. The FBR is always a fun place to be. Expect to work hard but also enjoy the opportunity to participate.
I went to Brewed Awakenings on 40th St. and Bell and it is closed and replaced by another coffee shop. It is a used book store and coffee place now. Sorry but I did not write down the name. Maybe you could update list on your site?
Check out this amazingly expensive coffee maker. The New York Times apparently got to sample it at the Blue Bottle Café in San Francisco. It costs $20,000.
How much should a cup of coffee cost? How much do you pay at your local coffee shop? Or if you own a shop or work at one, how much does a regular sized cup of coffee cost?
Well the Handpresso sure got a lot of interest. I received an email this morning from a reader named Jay Brewer. Jay sent in a link to a review of the Handpresso which includes photos of the unboxing. Cool stuff, I might just order one of these. Also, here’s a neat video I found online.
My vacation destination this summer is Italy. Am I excited? Of course I am! A few of the cities I’ll be visiting include Florence, Venice, Rome, and Pompeii.
Most of all though, I’m curious to compare the coffee scene to America. Have any of you visited Italy before? What should I expect? I’m planning to stop at LOTS of coffeebars. I’ve been reading up on it and realize it’s totally different than here. We have completely Americanized the idea of coffee.

One of the other interesting links that HB sent along to me was the Handpresso. For those curious, it’s basically a hand pump espresso extractor. The guidelines say to use cold water but there’s no doubt an interested camper out there that could heat some water ahead of time.
If you have troubles with your coffee going cold while you drive around town, this product may interest you. It’s called Brugo and as you can see in the picture it has a small area near the lid that holds a small amount of coffee that cools as you sip. I honestly don’t even know if that would help keep your coffee warmer longer but hey, it’s a shot. Thanks to Beryl for the tip.
